Container Logistics, Return & Demurrage Support in Nigeria

A container sitting still can keep generating cost. Demurrage, detention, terminal storage and missed return windows turn a routine shipment into an expensive problem.

What is container demurrage and detention in Nigeria?

Demurrage is charged when a container stays at the terminal beyond its agreed free time. Detention is charged when the container stays outside the terminal beyond the time allowed for its return. Terminal storage may be charged separately. In Nigeria the exposure is driven by discharge date, free-time terms, release readiness, trucking availability and depot return capacity.

Delay points

What can delay the operation

These are the points where this service most commonly loses time. Each is cheaper to resolve early than late.

  • release requirements completed after free time has already started running
  • trucking arranged before the container is actually releasable
  • depot return restrictions or acceptance windows
  • container condition disputes at return
  • examination or positioning delays inside the terminal
  • no single party tracking the Last Free Day

Preparation

What the client should prepare

Have these ready and most of the avoidable delay disappears before it starts.

  • bill of lading and container numbers
  • free-time terms agreed with the carrier
  • confirmed delivery address and receiving hours
  • offloading capability and turnaround time at delivery
  • authority to settle terminal and line charges
  • any special handling or equipment requirements

Operational visibility

How Vandyvah keeps the operation visible

  • when each container discharged
  • when free time expires
  • what is currently preventing movement
  • what action is outstanding and who owns it
  • what each additional day may cost

Container Logistics — questions we are asked

Can Vandyvah help reduce container demurrage and detention exposure?
Vandyvah can help clients monitor container discharge, free-time deadlines, release requirements, trucking, empty returns and operational exceptions. The goal is to identify delays early and coordinate the actions needed to reduce avoidable exposure.
What happens between container discharge and empty return?
Discharge, terminal positioning, documentation and release, terminal charge settlement, gate-out, trucking to the delivery point, offloading, and return of the empty unit to an accepting depot with an Equipment Interchange Receipt. Each step can consume free time.
How is delay exposure estimated?
Use the Vandyvah delay and demurrage calculator to model container count, free days, elapsed and expected delay, demurrage and detention rates, storage and trucking costs. Results are estimates — actual charges depend on contractual terms, carrier tariffs and operational circumstances.
