Protective Ship Agency Services in Nigeria
Your appointed agent should not be the only source of information about your port call.
What is protective agency in Nigeria, and how does it differ from port agency?
A port agent is appointed to act for the party nominating it and to execute the port call. A protective agent is appointed separately to observe and report on that port call in the interest of an owner, charterer or other party who is not the nominating party. The protective agent monitors activity, milestones, service delivery and disbursement-related activity, and reports independently.

Delay points
What can delay the operation
These are the points where this service most commonly loses time. Each is cheaper to resolve early than late.
- the protective appointment made after the vessel has already arrived
- information access not agreed with the nominated agent
- no defined reporting frequency or escalation route
- expectations that the protective agent can direct the port call
Preparation
What the client should prepare
Have these ready and most of the avoidable delay disappears before it starts.
- the charterparty or commercial terms relevant to the call
- the identity of the nominated agent and the appointing party
- the specific matters to be monitored and reported
- reporting frequency and format required
- escalation contacts and decision authority
- any prior disbursement history for comparison
Operational visibility
How Vandyvah keeps the operation visible
- independent milestone reporting through the port call
- prompt notice of anything that appears to create cost or delay
- records supporting each observation
- a written protective-agency report on completion
Protective Agency — questions we are asked
- What is the difference between protective agency and port agency?
- The port agent executes the port call for the nominating party. The protective agent is appointed separately by another interested party to observe, monitor and report on that same port call independently.
- When is a protective appointment most useful?
- Commonly on charterer-nominated calls, on a first call at an unfamiliar port, on commercially sensitive operations, or where an owner wants independent visibility of disbursement-related activity.
